Frank Faillace's success story is just too red-blooded for some tastes. And he publishes an adult entertainment guide called Exotica Magazine that blends gonzo scene reporting with extensive listings of nude dancing venues and escort services. All of which makes Faillace - pronounced: fuh-LA-chay like a kid who hides his report card even when he gets good grades. His mother, father, even his year-old son are comfortable with his line of work. But he's not eager, for instance, that his grandparents know his business. They wouldn't approve. Whether he's a visionary or an unprincipled peddler of vice, or both, Faillace's devotion to bringing skin, art and revelry together may have altered the entertainment landscape of his city. At Dante's, he battles a ceaseless barrage of inquiries from employees, tributes from well-wishers and cell phone calls, one of which ends with an 'I love you' to his teenage son. Onstage, the English quintet British Sea Power alternates between pretty pop textures and thundering post-punk anthems as the crowd swells toward the club's person capacity.
By the time emcee Andrew Harris takes the stage, smoke drifts through spotlights crisscrossing the stage and dance beats thud through the room, which Faillace has done up in his two favorite colors: red and dark. Faillace never played organized sports growing up in Coos Bay and Newberg, preferring art and music. At Newberg High School he was a standout in physics, math and computers. His SAT score of 1, he says, was the highest in his class.
